Why Box needs you:

You will join the newly established Data Foundations team within Core Data. We build, operate, and evolve the asynchronous data services that manage the scale and correctness of Box's growing data footprint — keeping it reliable, consistent, and synchronized across many systems and data stores. These services support a wide range of products and internal teams across Box.
The team will take ownership of several existing services, improving their reliability, observability, scalability, and architecture. This is a great opportunity to work on distributed systems at scale and directly shape the team's technical direction.

What you'll do:

• Own and evolve asynchronous data services that enable data synchronization across Box’s systems and data stores.
• Take ownership of existing services and improve their reliability, scalability, observability, and overall architecture.
• Design and implement new services and enhancements to accommodate growing data volumes and evolving platform requirements.
• Ensure data consistency and reliability across all data stores and downstream dependent systems.
• Collaborate with engineers and teams across Core Data and Box to understand data requirements, dependencies, and technical challenges.
• Help operate and improve production services by troubleshooting complex issues, triaging incidents, and addressing reliability and performance bottlenecks.
• Help drive the technical direction and engineering practices of the newly established Data Foundations team.
• Participate in the on-call rotation and remain available during assigned shifts to respond to, triage, and resolve production incidents.

 

Who you are:

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Mathematics or a related field.
• 5+ years of professional software development experience.
• Strong understanding of common algorithms, data structures and code design principles.
• Strong grasp of high-scale distributed systems.
• Strong programming background in strongly typed languages (e.g., Java, Scala).
• Hands-on experience with at least one relational database, such as MySQL or PostgreSQL, and familiarity with BigQuery.
• Strong sense of ownership, persistence and drive, strong communication skills.
• Actively use AI coding tools — such as Cursor, Claude Code, or Codex — as a core part of your development workflow, including requirements gathering, writing tests, and delivering code changes;
